Working
Holidays Every skill can be used - if you have time and enough patience to provide some training you can help The Gambia and Gambians escape from the idea that the only way to be successful is to leave their country. It won't cost you a vast amount above a normal 2/3 week break you might even get your present employer to sponsor the costs through GTS. Few will pay you while you are away but some will. Comments to GTS |
There are large numbers of adult Gambians unemployed partly because they have never been trained in work skills and partly because being the 14th poorest country in the world no one has any money so anyone with a good education tries to leave for Europe where even totally untrained workers can earn many times more than a Gambian at home. It is a situation that GTS is trying to change. The process is slow and not without difficulties but over the last 5 years we have made progress, it sometimes feels like one step forward and three back but overall the movement is forward. What is needed is an army of helpers who can give a few months of their time and skills working in the Gambia's sunshine, in just about every vocational occupation there is. Every skill we take for granted is needed by many Gambians, willing to work but with no experience of techniques or tool care in their particular field, be it gardening, building, woodwork, electrical fitting, plumbing etc. All these trades are needed and can earn a trained person enough to support their families. Can you help - please think about 3 or 6 months in Gambia as a volunteer who can pass on your skills to GTS associates who can then become self sufficient. This practical help is so much more valuable than putting money into a charity envelope and it will make you feel a whole lot better as well - this is not just for single people couples are very welcome and provide broader skills 5 Top
