All our early members joined having seen our pages on the
website. Over the first 10 years we have had more than 1000 members join and visit Gambia. All of the income generated from membership in the UK goes into the charity account - initially it was used to sponsor education and provide small loans (maximum of £50) to families, to setup or establish small businesses. (Although the businesses supported the families for a short length of time none lasted 12 months and none paid back any of the loans). GTS has dropped this funding approach until we have a stronger structure in Gambia that can provide the real support needed to start a business and run it profitably. We know of not one example of a business setup for a Gambian that continues to run without continual inputs of money from the initial sponsor or subsequent ones. From 2008 - 100% of GTS membership subscriptions will go towards the wages and training of GETS teaching staff as the GETS charity struggles to raise enough funds to train and pay our teachers reasonable wages. 5 Top
