BEWARE |
This week, I discovered one of the most interesting 'Gambia' websites that I have seen and it answers so many of the concerns that I have about missing areas in this site. The links on Islam are extensive, up to date and committed. There are some excellent special articles. One on The Gambian Stone circles, with good pictures and text and several others on places that the author, a Gambian living in Denmark has visited on trips home, I assume. Momodou is also into Jembi (drumming) and there are links to music sites as well as one partly administered by him. I hope to have some pages soon linking to the extensive network of links, that he has amassed. The second item of News this week is far more depressing. It was a message held within his visitors book. It was warning about a con-man who worked at the Senegambia Hotel and was sacked in November 1999 (or so it reported) It was titled as a warning to women visiting The Gambia. BUT is equally relevant to male visitors. We knew Eddie, the kids thought he was great, he looked just like Eddie Murphy and was part of the Hotel team who care for the visitors entertainment. Part of which was a very good mimed song and dance routine each evening after the restaurant closed. Eddie was brilliant, we have captured him on video in several routines. The visitors book entry warns that he is a conman owing the author of the entry £600 and another lady £4,500. There is no other detail apart from an email address to write to if you have been 'had' by Eddie. I believed Eddie to be from Senegal, many of the performers were and presumably he has now returned there, with the money. It is hard enough promoting The Gambia without stories of this sort, but I have printed it again here because it needs openly airing and it is exactly what GTS is attempting to stop, with its hosting services. Setting up GTS has cost considerably more than that, but is already providing full time employment and incomes for several Gambians and hopefully will expand to support many more, while helping to protect people from smooth talkers like Eddie. See also March 19th entry and comment, these ladies feel considerably lighter in their pockets and what ever Eddie was offering in exchange it was not good value for money. GTS advice is as ever:- Only give what you are freely prepared to, for charitable reasons. If you know Eddie and he reckons he's innocent, get him to contact Noeline and sort it out, then we'll take him out of the rogues gallery. 5 Top
