Art in The Gambia must be supported by tourists who are a major source of financial input into the country, but there is always the risk that the art becomes sterile, reproducing what the tourist wants rather than what the artist needs to express.
If you know where to look you can always find very interesting original works.

Artist - Teacher
There are a variety of artists in The Gambia producing interesting and original paintings and drawings, some are aimed directly at the tourist trade, others portray themes of global or social concern.
One artist we were lucky enough to meet, now teaches in the school within the SOS village at Manjai - West Coast. His pupils put on an exhibition each year to raise money for the school the pictures shown here are from the teacher and different pupils.
GTS has agreed to photograph the work and colour print it at A4 size and laminate it for sale, supporting the local school and artists. Prices will vary, but it provides a way for the artists to continue to earn an income from their work after the originals have been sold.
