Gap years are now considered a most valuable item on any students cv.
It displays an independance and level of maturity valuable to university entrants who are expected to be self disciplined and capable of looking after themselves.
Gambia is an ideal location for a gap year. Only 6 hours from the UK, it offers plenty of challenges to provide an extremely rewarding experience, but at the same time offers communications back to Europe so you can keep in touch.
If you are wanting a break between school and university, the Gambia's dry season between Nov and May is ideal.
GTS has had a total of 21 volunteers - (Gap Students and Working Break adults) since 2003 when we first made the opportunity available.
We now run or administer 4 Nursery schools in Gambia and have plans to build a one stop school, taking students from 3 to university level with training facilities for Gambian teachers along side.
We desperately need volunteers who can spend time with our Gambian teachers, helping them to develop their English speaking, reading, comprehension and conversational skills. There are of course opportunities to help in the classes of 3 to 7 year olds, but the emphasis is on helping the teachers.
Gap year visitors can also learn all about African culture, music, food and dance, as well as enjoying up to 6 months in a beautiful location only 15 minutes from the sea.

This facility is now on offer every year to suitable students.
If your parents want to visit the Gambia before or during your visit they are very welcome, BUT that depends on you and them to decide.
The cost of a GTS Gambia gap year is significantly less than any comparable we have seen, we do not offer gaps to anywhere other than The Gambia we have virtually no admin costs and no admin staff to pay out of your money.
GTS Gambia Gaps provide practical help to local teachers and at the same time provide you with a secure environment where you can develop skills of caring and personal development so useful to potential university entrants.
We now have our own accommodation for Volunteers at Kololi, in a pleasant location developed for tourists and providing a place for GTS and GETS members to meet when they visit Gambia.
