The Delahayes GTS Safari

Joining GTS right at the end of the 1999 dry season, Tony and Bec picked up their cards in Gambia as there was no time to process their Membership cards in the UK

A bit of the real thing

The rainy season was just starting and as a result Tony and Bec had got a brilliant deal at the Senegambia Hotel, with a second week totally free of charge.

Bec found GTS on the Web via the GambiaNet site, sent us an email.
We talked over the phone

  • Could GTS take them round the Gambia away from the crowds - YES
  • Could GTS suggest the best night spots and arrange transport - YES
  • Could GTS organise an astronomy evening - YES
  • Could GTS arrange a different quality restaurant each night - YES
  • Could GTS take them on Safari into Senegal to a National Park - YES

And what was more they were returning on the same flight that Njundu was arriving on for his first ever trip out of the Gambia, so we also arranged to collect them from Gatwick on their return

I didn't meet Tony and Bec till they returned - "We had a brilliant holiday, it would have been difficult for it to have been as good without GTS - Lamin was a star! He was just so willing to help and make the holiday what we wanted. He worked so hard - Brilliant!! We want tp help GTS if we can."

"All your GTS hosts are such nice guys - we got no hassle at all and we did so much more than we expected, even a 5 day safari into Senegal - That really was the highpoint, it was better than we ever imagined, the wildlife and birds were just everywhere. We'll get a second set of prints so you guys can have a set."

"What really made the difference was how friendly they all were without getting in the way of our holiday - that was so good"

Tony and Bec went on to support our container to Gambia, by getting about 60 bicycles, in the end 30 went to FROGS another UK charity and we took the rest. The pictures were great and we hope you enjoy them as much as we did.

Tony and Bec are returning to Australia after a few years in the UK, they talk of continuining their links with GTS and hope that other Aussies will join GTS and explore The Gambia.

It makes such a difference to get feedback from our members, if you are a regular you will know we print the good and the bad and although most people say that only bad news gets reported so far we are pleased to say that GTS is getting mostly GOOD reports.

Wild Boar, Baboon in the Jungle, Hippo and typical up river village well, images captured by Bec and Tony on their 5 day safari up river and into Senegal

Hopefully we will get some more safari images when Cathy and Nigel Lee go on an 8 day safari with Lamin in January 2001
