Ann, husband Paul & the 3 children hesitated about joining GTS, after the medical injections they were concerned about the additional cost, but they did join after discovering that transfers through their tour company were going to cost and extra £75 pounds. I think the letter from the Witcomb family says it all, they had a great holiday and felt much of that was due to GTS. We look forward to seeing the family back in Gambia at some time in the future.
GTS earns the money to support its charity staff by taking members to sponsored schools and the GTS members days out mentioned by Ann as excellent value. The staff then carry out the charity work meaning that any money donated to GTS is used to help in Gambia and not pay wages. If you think you can help raise money for the GTS education charity, please contact us. At the time of writing this GTS is supporting almost 300 children from Nursery school to University. GTS wants to build and run a junior school and staff it with European volunteers and Gambian teachers helping and support each other. With the launch of the GES charity the UK registered wing of GTS, we hope this aim is one step closer. After set backs with early GTS staff we feel we have a Gambian team as committed as we are to helping Gambia. We will need support and fund raising but your £'s really will go into GTS projects and not greedy pockets Comments to GTS |
Dear Francis, After being back home for a fortnight I feel I can write a bit more coherently! Firstly, I must say that joining GTS was the best decision we made! From the moment we met Kabs, Modou and Baba at the airport we were made to feel welcome and we arrived at our hotel nearly an hour before everyone else. Through GTS we were able to see and experience so much more than if we had booked the tour operators trips. The Rural Gambia trip was excellent value for money and it was much nicer going out in a small group with people we already considered friends, particularly for the children.
It's amazing that we managed to do so much in one day - beautiful beaches, the smoke houses at Tanji, the farm at Tujering with the friendly and informative Anthony and family and a lovely lunch at GTS Brufut. We had many more great days out with our hosts and some relaxing evenings at the GTS resteraunt with great food and entertainment. We were always treated with a warm welcome from all the resteraunt staff who not only served great food but also played with the kids, always had time for a ,(hassle free!), chat and even an impromptu game of football with the local boys!
We will definitely be returning and will continue to support GTS as best we can.
It may be worth noting that many people, including travel agents, tried to put us off taking our children to The Gambia. We had no more problems than the usual family holiday and there was lots for kids to do. I would be happy to answer any questions that other families might have about the practical issues involved - what to take, what to do etc. Anyway, Francis, I know you are a busy man with registration as a UK charity looming so I will leave it at that for now. Please let us know if there is anything we can do to help in any way. We do have, in our loft, a large number of new training shoes that were donated by Tonbridge Public School for GTS but I'm wondering how these could be sent over? Theres no rush as they're safely stored so let me know the best way to go about it when you get chance! Thanks again for all your help, Please send any email to GTS that you would like forwarded to Ann and don't be out off going with a small family - but maybe join GTS before you go. 5 Top
