Brikama has the largest gathering of wood carvers in the country. It isn't a factory as we would know it but this is where the tree trunks arrive and are cut up. The carvers and their apprentices then get to work, roughly carving out the main form of the piece and this is then finished off ready for distribution. The many stalls that exist everywhere in the tourist area then do the final finishing and polishing and display the work until it is sold. Most tourists to Brikama get to go round the wood craft market stalls, very few ever see the actual factory behind and even fewer the tree cutting behind that. Brikama is special because of the scale of the work and the number of carvers working there. Each has his own style so there is more choice at this market than anywhere else. Lamin and Foday know carvers there so if you go as part of a day out to the 'Village life Areas' they will take you to meet their friends at Brikama, you can commission special work, take photographs and chat to the craftsmen.
