Queen Amie's son has his mothers enthusiasm and drama and charm4 |
If you travel along New Town Road from Fajara, a long semi industrial road watch out for some very vicious 'sleeping policemen' along the way - towards the T junction at the Bakau end there is a turning to the right opposite the primary school. The Gena Bes studio is there. Run by Queen Amie Krubally, it is quite different in style and approach to other Batik outlets. For starters you can spend time there learning to create different types of Batik, printed, painted as well as tie dye. Being the first Batik works in the Gambia 1971, many of the people now creating Batiks learnt the skills here and have adapted them to the more symbolic figures found elsewhere. It is a special treat when Queen amie arrives, she is a wonderful woman with a marvellous twinkle of excitement and presence in her eye. She tells grest stories of he travels and her life and approached every day as special, a real treat!! GTS members will get a 10% discount and a special welcome from Adam, who prints all our GTS logo items.
