The road down to the pier at Bakau

The beach at Bakau

Fish market stalls can be found either at the quay side or at the road side near the taxi park in Bakau.

This part of The Gambia, being as close as it is to the Atlantic has the most fantastic fresh fish. The place to get it is straight from the sea your self or from one of the boats as they come ashore.

The choice is incredible, Lady fish, Butter fish, Baracuda the list is almost endless and all makes a feast almost however you cook it.

A specialist catch are the shrimps, I have never tasted shrimps like them and would recommend them fresh from the market to anyone. Far better than any that have been frozen or kept in a hotel or restaurant fridge.

How will you cook them?

Any GTS host will provide the means for a barbecue, and just over the road is the Bakau produce market to get some sweet potatoes or other accompaniment. Try some local Tapalapas (locally cooked bread)

You could not have a better meal in a restaurant anywhere.

Bakau port is a nice place anyway and worthy of a visit anyway, the pier can be walked and provides excellent views of the activities on shore, especially when a boat comes in.

If you have a line and some bait you can try you fishing skills here, we have seen and eaten many a fish caught here by a local.
