Drums and rhythm are a way of life in West Africa, they are not just a part of the tourist trade it is an integral part of the culture. The Africans call them Jembi and they come in all sizes and shapes some are simple some very ornately carved, others are for the sound only. At the drum factory the hollowed trunk produced by hand eleswhere, is crafted into a drum, the goats hide is prepared, rings of exactly the right size for each drum are made and the sink stretched taught to provide the required sound. Drums can cost anything up to £100 depending on the work involved and the quality of sound produced. The factory is nothing more than a compound specialising in making drums. They are happy to talk about and show you the process and play and let you play on the different drums they have available and take pictures. If you are a GTS member you will get a 20% discount. If you are just looking we ask that a donation of 10D per person is made for the time spent with you. If you buy a drum, they will most definitely suggest you come back and spend some time being taught by them an offer you can take up and negotiate a price.
