You will probably not enjoy Albert market as much as the market in Serekunda, but it is the place to go if you visit Banjul. It is large, very busy and bustles with activity from early in the day to late in the afternoon.

It really is the heart of Banjul, but if you are staying in Banjul do not imagine that if you have seen Albert market there is no point in visiting elsewhere.

Really there are 3 markets here.

The wholesale and retail market, that sells everything the local people could possible want, from clothes to hardware.

The produce market, selling fruit, vegetables, fish, meat and dried goods.

The tourist market and craft stalls, catering for the tourist trade, the size of it makes it impressive and there is plenty of choice.

You will probably get fed up with the crowds and the jostling before you have seen it all, but you are only moments away from the river or the African heritage centre for a few moments to recover.

If you are visiting Banjul, the market is a must BUT don't just visit for the market, Serekunda is just as good if not better.

The banks of The Gambia are only a few metres away and this is a different world. Pirogues ply across the river, the large ferry boats come and go and a whole mini town lives on the foreshore in make do dwellings.

A calm and curiosity is shown by the people we have met here, most are pleased and eager to meet you and will ask if you have pens or anything, the younger people nearly all speak English where as their parents will speak one of the tribal languages.

You will probably enter Albert Market and leave it via Wellington Street, which itself is worth wandering down. Stamp collectors will know that Gambian stamps are among the most interesting and colourful available and the Main Postoffice in Wellington Street has a special section for philatelists.
