By tourist standards, if you are only visiting one museum during your whole stay, then this must be the one. Just a little further along the same road as the 'Camel Safari' and 'Fish Smoking' houses in Tanjii, together these three represent a brilliant day out, with a little time to stroll along the beaches, in an area that we feel is the nicest in this part of The Gambia. As soon as you arrive and enter the visitors reception centre, you realise that this is the real thing. The exhibits are well labelled and explanations are clear and well presented. Outside, the museum represents the village life, from working traditional well to a full group of traditional village buildings with traditional artifacts as and where they are used. There are also working exhibitions of weaving and jewellery making, displaying the crafts of the Gambia. The guided tour expands in words what you can see and adds details that bring the whole place to life. But there are also written guides so you can take in the whole place at your own speed. The large grounds are exceptionally well laid out with a wide range of plants, bushes and trees, each carefully labelled, with details of the uses that each has in cooking, medicine and tradition, again a sheet contains all the details. This could be described as a model museum, they really are getting it right, we don't think that you can find better, but if you do please let us know so we can add them to our directory.
