The water sports facilities are still patchy, we spent a couple of days chasing leads, but apart from the odd sailboard and body surfer and old pedaloes, the facilities are currently under developed. (2000) NEW In early 2001 - The Watersport Center, opened near Fajara Craft Market close to Bungalow Beach Hotel. Jens the owner runs the centre with the help of Sonny his Gambian manager, from a small timber building near the beach. (We understand that this operation closed in early 2002) New in late 2003 - Hooked on Gambia offer Sport fishing from Denton Bridge and what's more, the company offers a 5% discount to GTS members upon production of their membership card PLUS the opportunity to take their catch back to the GTS bar & restaurant for dinner - where it will be prepared as a feast for you at half the menu price Fishing is quite a different matter. All along the coast from Kololi to Banjul there are boats with a varying capacity and quality of equipment. All are offering Sport Fishing most now have fixed prices. At GTS, we have so far never been asked to arrange a sport fishing trip, but we have negotiated discounts with one or two operators. I think most sport fishermen, feel that negotiating their own deal is part of the sport! The Julas Bar (right along the Beach from the Palma Rima) has a small boat available for fishing trips. The seas around the coast are heaving with fish, but I note that the government in 2000 is considering fishing restrictions to avoid over fishing of the area off their shores. Serious anglers will want to take their own gear, and can charter boats from around Denton Bridge as well as round Banjul. The International Game Fishing Association recently accepted as a world record a 63lb King Threadfin caught by Anna Gandy while in Gambia, beating the 50lb 11oz one her husband Peter caught a few month earlier. Any GTS member who wants to go fishing please let us know before you leave the sort of thing you are after so the options can be ready for you when you arrive. There are less arduous fishing options up the creeks where you can mix a spot of bird watching with a lazy afternoons fishing or even off Denton Bridge, where a line with hook and bait will provide your tea if you are lucky and you can watch the professional Gambian fishermen with their thrown circular nets and the cormorants making it all look very easy. 5 Top
