Tanji Camel Safari Not native to Gambia, these camels provide an excellent basis to a 'different' days excursion along this part of the coast. |

The trip out to Tanji passes the fishing villages associated with Ghana Town, itself an interesting short stop. As you cross the bridge towards Tanji you will see the safari base on your left with the Atlantic to the right and the Tanji fish smoking houses further along. Trips of half an hour are the shortest but you can book an hour a half day or a full day safari, including a barbecue lunch on the beach. The safari base has a bar with snacks and small gift shop. The whole experience is very photogenic, but it is not without reason that these animals are known as ships of the dessert. If you want pictures along the way, take your camera and walk. While at Tanji, consider a look round the smoking houses where they 5 smoke 'Bongo' fish. Try some it tastes of very delicate smoked chicken. And start the day or finish it with a trip to the excellent Tanji Village Museum, this really is the best museum in The Gambia. It has plenty of content, is well laid out and the guides are friendly and informative.
