I was fortunate enough to meet up with Emma during my 3 month visit to Gambia this year and we travelled up river beyond Basse to the village of Boro where Foday's family still lives.
Emma swam the river Gambia from bank to bank, a good 250 metres or more, which must have seemed lots more when the thought of crocodiles suddenly occured half way across. Above is the very spot, although the water looks muddy - this was just near the bank where people are walking about, away from the sides it was crystal clear and very inviting. Emma lives to tell the story and to write a new Rough Guide book on the Gambia, due to be published later this year. In the meantime she has been busy writing articles for my favourite Africa magazine.
The article is well worth the purchase price of the Magazine £4.25 for Gambia enthusiasts like myself, it has to be admitted that there are not as many articls about gambia as I'd like, but we are being treated by Travel Africa who covered the Roots Music festival, again by Emma in the Autumn 2002 Edition. You can visit their website at www.travelafricamag.com, I have been trying to get Craig Rix the editor along as an exhibitor at the CLA GameFair, where this excellent publication would do so well among the very classy safari companies. Maybe in 2004 when the Fair is at Bleinham.
