The Jawara family lost the father and provider Denano in 1999, after a three year illness, leaving 2 wives and 12 children unsupported, the remaining family of Denano helps, but it is very difficult.
Oumie is now 10 years old and attends Jamisa Primary School in Brikama, she is in Grade 3.
She is the youngest child of this mother who has 7 children to support.
Oumie has 4 sisters and 2 brothers.
Foday visits the family on a regular basis and goes to the school to get a progress report on Oumie direct from her teachers.
In August 2001 we met Oumie her mother and one brother visiting relatives in Talading, just outside Serrakunda. Oumie missed the last few weeks of school due to a very severe attack of malaria, she is better now and hopes to take her exams when she gets back to school and move on the the next grade at her school in Brikama.
