Modern Slavery Channel Four UK - Slavery |
|
The
Gambia Slavery This program was bound to be controversial, non of us like to think we support slavery. We all want the best value out of a deal, to save money and make our earnings go further. This was a chilling account of how our selfishness supports the slave system and as the multinational buyers get bigger and stronger the prices are forced down and slavery increases. This was not an issue about Gambia, but is does affect West Africa. GTS urges you to support the RUGMARK project and be alert to Slavery and do your bit to resist it. |
Modern day slavery still exists in many developing areas of the world. In the Ivory coast young men are brought from Mali 300 miles away. They are tricked into slavery by being told they are going to paid employment infact they are unpaid slaves used by farmers to tend the cocoa plantations. It is estimated that 90% of the plantations use slave labour. If this is true 2/5ths of the worlds supply is tainted by slavery. The average chocolate eater in the UK gets through 200 bars a year. The World Bank HQ in the USA is set up to alleviate poverty in the Third World but has employees who they provided with visas etc. to bring domestic workers to the USA. There are a number of cases of domestic slavery. Many domestic workers are never allowed out if their houses so the extent of the issue is not known. This problem of domestic slavery is not just in the USA it exists around the world, in Geneva, in London. In India, expensive carpets are woven and sent mainly to the UK and USA, this is a multi million pound business. Slavery is illegal in India, but it does go on. A raid on one house freed 18 child slaves, who were later rehabilitated and sent home to their parents. An organization called Rugmark accredits each carpet to ensure it is not produced using slave labour, but few retailers are partners to the scheme. An exception in the UK is B & Q all their rugs are Rugmarked the added cost is just £1.00 to ensure no slave labour is used. Brian and Kate believe that there are now more slaves world wide than ever before, and in a Global market we - the consumers all benefit, BUT also as consumers we have the power to eradicate slavery completely. 5 Top
