Mae started work in The Gambia over ten years ago and now since registering in 1998 spends most of her time at it or raising money for it.

The School at Batkunko 5 miles past Tanji was disrupted by the new road project but Mae hopes to rebuild a skills centre there for older kids who have miss out on education so far.

North of the river a new school is being officially opened at the end of May 2001 at Medina Mannah, when a dozen of the charities helpers are visiting gambia for the opening.

Further up river near Elephant Island they have built a 200 place school at Bambali and hope to start on a new school nearby at Kinjetta.

Only documents with the Schools for Gambia logo are to do with this charity.

We were given a leaflet about this charity during my Easter 2001 visit.

UK registered Charity No. 1070632

The chairperson for 'Schools for Gambia' is:

Mae Winterton
Holmcroft
Middle Lane
Congleton
Cheshire
England CW12 3PU

Phone 01260 272361

Their work is mainly with rural schools.

They concentrate on one project at a time seeing it to completion so they can control how the money is being spent. So far they have built or rebuilt 5 schools and worked on the renovation of 7 others.

They send school materials out to Gambia and have been supplied with seeds by Suttons for vegetable gardens at Jinak and helped numerous schools with furniture and writing materials

In 98/99 nearly £10,000 was contributed to Gambian school projects and that has risen each year to a current figure appraoching £30,000.

Schools for Gambia try to send 2 40' containers each year to Gambia and this immediately takes over £7000 from the money they raise, like GTS they pride themselves with using no donated monies for any of the running costs of the charity.

Projects like this are always in need of resouces for building, furniture and school materials and teachers pay, if you feel you can help please contact Mae above or their sponsorship contact:

Mae recently joined GTS as a member (May 2003) and we both hope we can work more closely in the future. Mae is visiting Gambia around June this year to coincide with their latest container's arrival at Banjul and will be there again in November when we hope to meet in Gambia at the GTS Bar and Restaurant.
