Salifu's sponsors also provided
him with a bicycle in 2004 to make his difficult journey to school easier.
Salifu Njie was born on 10th February 1981, he came from Basse about 300 kms away from South Gambia, and was attending his primary school in a village called "Nawde". In 1995, he went to grade 7 at Saint Muluba's Agricultural School, but was not able to complete, because his father married 3 wives and bears many children. "As a farmer, I had to help him in order for him to earn our living" said Salifu. Salifu later wrote a letter to his uncle who is staying at Madiana Village in Kombo South, Western Division for him to help in paying his school fees, his Uncle then asked him to come over but he also got many children and responsibilities to meet, but they try their level best to help each other, hence he know that Salifu is really willing to learn. "I finally came to continue my education at Tujereng upper basic school in the year 2003, and then I sat to my second term examination and came out with aggregate 6, which was the best result. Though my Uncle is working, but his salary is too small to provide for his family and support my education. I worked personally as a labourer, in order to supplement the financial provision to my education. Thus, his sponsor came in the year 2003, when Kabs got E-mails from Francis that a GTS member wanted to sponsor a student in the rural countryside. Kabs and GTS member Linda Kerr went to Tujereng Upper Basic School to meet the principal to recommend some one who is really determined and needing help; Salifu came to be the lucky one. He is now sponsored by Nick & Sheila Palister. Salifu studies English language, Mathematics, General Science, Agricultural Science, Social and Environmental studies, Technical Drawing, Arts and Craft and French language. His best subjects are all core subjects, Technical drawing, Islamic Religious Knowledge and Agricultural Science. He aims to be a scientist in the future. According to his class Teacher, Salifu is very brilliant and hard working and he is now the Head Boy of the school. He walks 40 minutes to school, but the sponsors have bought a bicycle for him to use to school. He is very happy now and promised to keep his performance up. 5 Top
