Bintou is staying with her grandmother, who is looking after her feeding and education. Her father died when she was 11 months old. Her mother now has remarried as a third wife to a new husband, who has other children. Therefore her new husband cannot afford to support all of her family due to the fact that he has other children to look after.

Her grandmother sells roasted groundnuts for their living, so there is not a lot of money coming in to the family. Her grandmother is ageing and has been advised not to go near the fire that she uses to roast the nuts.

Maria came to the Gambia for a holiday and when she saw the work of GTS, especially on sponsorship, decided to sponsor a child herself. GTS allocated Bintou for Maria and her family as they are sponsoring 5 children, Bintou and 4 of Kebba's family (the former GTS night watchman).

Bintou is very good in school and very dedicated. With the sponsorship there is enough funds for her and her sister who is in Grade 3 to have extra tuition at home. She is very intelligent and always smiling. Her grandmother is very happy and grateful about Bintou's sponsorship as it takes the pressure off her. If there is any money left over from Bintou's sponsorship annually a bag of rice is bought for the family.
