GTS and FOTGA are both helping in The Gambia and although we are supporting some educational initiatives like May Rooney's Paper Mill our main aim is to support local people by increasing employment opportunities for them.

FOTGA has now (2002) opened new offices in Kersering a village near Senegambia

The only truly UK nation wide Gambian charity is FOTGA "Friends of the Gambia Association" Reg Charity No: 1051745

Their current secretary, Jim Everton is a retired school master and lives at their registered address,
5 Commonside Cottages
Salle,
Norwich NR10 4EP

FOTGA has its own newly established website www.fotga.org.uk

The charity raises money to sponsor children's education, fund school building and refurbishment, it has one main employee Malleh Jagne, who has worked for FOTGA since 1996.

You can join FOTGA as a member for £10 pp per year or have joint membership for £15 and receive their bi-annual newsletter DRUMBEAT.

We have removed the charges made by each cahrity as there are large differences and undoubtedly differences in the service provided and the charges change year to year. Charities should not be in competition to gather sponsors - If you are intersted in sponsoring a child through FOTGA, please use the contact numbers above & below:

During 1999 FOTGA provide nearly £14,500 worth of educational sponsorship, helping many children with their education costs.

I met Jim, his wife and a couple of ladies who have volunteered to help in Gambia for a few months - Nice work if you can get it - GTS now provides Student Gap Years and Working Holidays.

We all went out to Brufut to see the development at the site and to discuss our plans for local development. Apart from the well, the container and the wall and hundreds of blocks there was not too much to see - but as the centre is built it could provide FOTGA visitors with accomodation in a beautiful location away from the hustle and bustle of the Atlantic Hotels.

Jim was kind enough to suggest that 'Drumbeat' (The FOTGA Magazine) would introduce GTS to FOTGA sponsors, who might find the services we provide more inline with their aim to support the local people, than the large hotels. I hope that we will be able to provide support services to more and more FOTGA visitors over the coming months and years.
