Most tourists take the southern road to Tendaba and beyond the road is better.
The northern road over the ferry from Banjul and past the ROOTS sites leads on to a small ferry & Kerewan. To the right there is a road to Salekaine a village of rice fields much as they were years ago - good bird watching here.
There are just small hamlets until you reach Farafenni. it has a good market on a Sunday known locally as a LUMO.
Many visitors now head south over the river and to Soma and back to the coast stopping at Tendaba and maybe a few other villages on the way.
The northern route up river takes in the ancient stone circles sites before even reaching Wassau.
