GTS Directory Beach Bars Coastal erosion
Only part of the floor left in October 2000 |
At Cape Point the road runs left and right along the coast, left you end up at the Siva Beach Hotel and right you pass the Taccos 2000 club and Aimes Beach Hotel. When you come to a small turning on your left you will see the Mariatou Casino and further down (about 50m) you'll see to your right the Calypso Bar with parking spaces. The Calypso has a small water tower, walk past it (over the grass of the Calpso's back garden) and take the track past the old generator house and you will see The Sunshine bar in front of you. As you will gather from the above description MANY people miss it totally - DON'T be one of them, it is an excellent Beach Bar and has fabulous real Gambian cookery. FOR HOW MUCH LONGER Oumie and her staff have been operating here for over 10 years, and like many people along this part of the coast suffer from the Rainy season storms that are washing away the coastline here. Where there was 30 metres of sand and foreshore Oumie is threatened to be washed away any year now - So time is short if you are to catch it before it goes. Oumie prepares her African dishes for 1 o'clock, and charges 30D for whatever the dish of the day happens to be. She also prepares fresh fish dishes either LadyFish or Barracuda. Her father a retired policeman now runs 3 boats from the port at Bakau and provides the fish FRESH each day. The lobsters are fantastic, but must be ordered the day before. I cannot recommend it highly enough, the food preparation areas are spotlessly clean and the cooking is to the highest standard. If you have not had fresh pressed Orange juice then try that while you are here and watch the oranges freshly pressed for your individual drink. GTS Members will get a 20% discount off the food prices, if they produce their GTS Membership card. But even if you aren't a member say 'Hello' to Oumie from GTS.
