In early April 2003 Kabs sent me some photos of a school saying "This school definitely needs our support Fra" I asked him for details, this is what he sent LOCATION OF THE SCHOOL - The project is located in Bakoteh village and more specicaly in Bakoteh central. The village is located in the Kanifing Municipallity, Greater Banjul area. The school has two class rooms and office with a student roll of 80 students. It has a total number of 3 staff two teachers and one teacher incharge. Bakoteh as a village has a population of about ten thousand people and children under the age of seven constitute 15% of the population. The initial idea to build a nursey school for the community was first conceried by few member of the community. The rational behind this is to provide an affordable and quality education for the children of the poor parents. Funds were raised by those member through their own contribution, no other contribution was received. The Land and building is 100% community
owned and no rent is paid either.
COSTS
The total cost of construction is 38270 dalasi - around £1000 The wages bill for the teachers for 1 year is 18000 dalasi less than £500 After the initial building it will cost around £12.50 a year for each child to have free education in their own village school, It is just such a small amount to make this school self sufficient. Once built GTS would use GTS Bakoteh as a destination school for visits and give visitors the opportunity to sponsor one place to provide the on going running costs. 5 Top
