GTS members can transfer sums for sponsorships and college fees using GTS, but where you are wanting to send sums to individuals you often have to pay twice.

First in the country from where you are sending the money - as a fee of some sort for handling and then again at the destination, where your money is converted to the local currency at a low rate of exchange.

I have been quoted by one organisation a £50 fee for a £1000 transfer and a rate of only 45 dalasi to the pound at the collection point in Gambia, with the current exchange rate at around 50D to the £ - The Cost was high

The real answer is to call around
BUT . . . . I have found no one better than B*E*D*, they are Gambian based, but truly International as you can see from their contacts page showing the extent of their foreign bases. (B*E*D* - GTS Members please contact me for full details - to make your money go further in Gambia)

The process is really easy, you pay your money into the transfer account at a high street bank and get a receipt. Then you call them and provide the name of the person picking up the funds and a location (see below)

The company will give you a transaction number which the person at the other end must have to pick up the currency. If the money is paid into the account one day - the cash is ready in Gambia the next day.

An excellent service and very cheap.

The fees vary with the amount being sent but the money is converted at only .5 of a dalasi less than the street rate.
£ 1- 100 costs £5
£ 101- 300 costs £10
£ 301- 500 costs £15
£ 501- 750 costs £20
£ 751-1000 costs £30
Above that, an additional £10 for every £500 up to £3000 - Above £3000, the rate is 2%

So measured against the cheapest alternative that I have found (which was £84 for £1000) B*E*D* will cost a £30 fee + about £15 in lost money when converting, so just £45 - a big saving and the very best way and safest way I have found of sending money to Gambia other than booking a flight and taking it.

Money can be picked up from various town locations in Gambia - Banjul, SereKunda, Brikama, Soma and Basse. Full addresses are given at the time of the transaction.

Unlike some of the UK based companies I spoke to the staff comunicate well in English and are polite and pleased to deal with your business.
