Gambia Tourist Support - Reg Charity No 362/2003

New GTS site near Sanamentering

Our problems with 2 local Gambians over land, prompted a UK couple to make GTS the offer of a compound near the sea at Brufut for at least 5 years.

GTS Members Pamela and David help GTS vision come true.

The project that stalled twice over our purchase of land at last looks like coming true on land temporarily rented to GTS for 5 years or more.

It has been sad and a great personal disappointment for us that we have twice been let down by Gambians whose own interests have proved greater than the needs of their own country folk.

Brufut 3 has become a part of our very successful Rural Gambia Day.
Pamela and David still take an active interest and are starting to think about future developments, GTS continues to have our small museum of West African music and life style.

Aimee and Coca, got married and now have a little daughter, they have settled in Canada and have set up a music business, part of the profits will go to GETSuk to help fund educational projects in Gambia.

Coca regularly flies back to Guinea to get materials for making his musical instruments.

We hope to see them on a visit back to Gambia in the not TOO distant future.

Pamela and David, discovered the GTS website earlier this year and contacted us with their generous offer to have the house and compound for GTS to use however we saw appropriate.

I met Pamela in London and was totally sure this offer was genuine, on 31st October, Pamela and David arrived in Gambia after a 3 year absence to draw up the papers to make GTS the legal occupiers of the land for at least 5 years.

I went with them to see the land and house.

I can only describe it as stunning.

The very large garden is full of beautiful trees, fruit and flowers abound everywhere - the large bungalow house is equally inpressive and looks like something out of a 19th century novel. Large palm trunks support the wide verhanda that encircles the whole house. There is a massive living room 60 foot by 15 foot. 4 large bedrooms, two shower rooms and toilets a kitchen and a store.

GTS will put Brufut 3 to use as soon as possible.

We are already working on the information sheets offering members a very special day out, taking in the holy site of Sannamentering, a short beach walk where your transport will pick you up and take you to Madiana for an African village stroll and back to Brufut 3 for a delicious light lunch followed by one of several sessions with the themes of Cooking, Music making, Batik & Crafts, Medicine Marabous and relaxation, the day will be concluded with a sunset visit to the Sannamentering cliffs before the short journey back to GTS Kololi.

The GTS library will at last have a home and we hope to have an early learning program starting for local women and their pre school children.

By a wonderful coincidence Aimee from Canada and her husband Coca are back to help us for up to a full year and Aimee has agreed to help us with it, especially with the musical skills of Coca who is not only an accomplished musician but also a skilled instrument maker.

This is going to be a stunning GTS special day out, we are expecting groups of between 5 and 20 people and hopefully by next season we will be able to offer member accommodation for overnight visits.

Prices at present look like being around £20 for the day for existing members, non members will be able to take out a days membership for £5.

It has taken GTS a very long time to provide this facility and we expect it to be such popular day out for members, that pre booking a trip is highly recommended - we will be restricting the visit to a maximum of 20 visitors on any day.
