Room 25 off the Great Court

If you haven't been to The British Museum in London recently, then next time you take a trip to London, put this venue on your itinery, the Great Hall itself with its fantastic new roof is reason enough, but for all those interested in Africa the new Sainsbury Galleries are a major draw, with around 850 square metres of gallery space

Tube to Tottenham Court Road or to Holben

The Sainsbury African Galleries present both the riches of Africa's past and its vivid contemporary culture, showing work by some of Africa's foremost living artists. The exhibition is arranged thematically ito sections exploring wood sculpture, masks & masquerade, pottery, brass casting, forged metal work, textiles and articles of personal adornement

The samples above show an elaborate weaving (left) (TimeOut Magazine No 1593) and a power figure (right) Nkisi Kozo from the Congo in the form aof a double headed dog (Travel Africa Magazine 2001)

The Museum's African collection, wide ranging in chronology and geography (and previously housed at the Museum of Mankind) is among the finest in the world and includes both unique masterpieces of craftsmanship and objects of everyday life.
