Gambia Tourist Support - Reg Charity No 362/2003

Another excellent book

Our Grandmothers' Drum by Mark Hudson
Not the drama of The Poisonwood Bible, but a wonderfully readable book about women's life in late 80's Gambia

In so many ways Mark has identified what makes Gambia a magical place, special and life changing.

I feel that Gambia actually represents reality and the West represent 'virtual' reality.

A great read

Although this is book is about 25 years ago - things have not changed dramatically in rural Gambia. Mark's book is just full of observations made while he stayed in a rural village near Bintang Bolong.

One of the reasons for the lack of new pages on the website has been the time I have spent reading over the last week or so.

Copies are not easy to find, but a search on the Internet produced the results, there are some second hand ones available and a paperback printed by Vintage - ISBN 0-7493-9087-5

If you have liked Gambia you will find it hard to put this book down, if you think Gambian women are graceful and incredibly hard working, this book is a tribute to them, it is a picture of Gambia before the massive changes that are going on.

Please let me have your comments and observations - if anyone has a copy they no longer require please consider sending it to GTS for our book lending scheme in Gambia - Thank you
