Hotel on the cliffs

A rustic and ethnic flavour, had run down but has recently been taken in hand and tidied up. Wonderful panoramic clifftop restaurant and close to the centre of Bakau.

The hotel surrounds the pool. Its pool-bar is on a manmade island built round a large coconut-palm in the centre.

From the Atlantic Restaurant, steps descend to the artificial beach - a rectangle of sand on blocks above the deep red lacerite Bakau rocks.

According to Tomkinson (Gambia book) the African Village was converted in 1974 into 28 rooms, increased to 43 in 1975, partly burned down in 1978 and rebuilt in 1979. It now has 78 rooms, all with a shower & fans for hire (20 dalasis pd., 100 p.w.).

Most of the rooms are small, low or round huts, with thin twin mattresses on concrete plinths; a few are larger with seaview, plus some air-conditioned mini-suites.

In 1999 it was repainted brightly and since then refurbishment plans have been going on.

Bed & breakfast 350-600 dalasis for a double, 250-500 for a single room.

GTS members have stayed there and think it is fine withing the moderate price range
