Where to eat and GO

Self catering really is an option, with good Super Markets and a very wide variety of fresh foods available locally. The best is obtained from the special markets - and taking a Gambian friend to help is often useful.

Lamin with the catch, getting ready for a Barbecue

If you happen to be about when a boat comes in, it's worth checking to see if they have any freshly caught fish for sale.

Lamin enjoyed cooking and made a fantastic West African spicy stew with beef, lamb or fish.

Eating is an issue that depends on the nature of your holiday package, if you are self-catering or B&B then you'll want some food from somewhere but many people just eat in their hotel. As you will have gathered this site is really encouraging you to get out and about with the locals and is offering a safe way to do that through our GTS Hosts.

GTS has it's own Bar and Restaurant in Senegambia, over the years it has growm from a Bar selling food, to a Restaurant with a Bar, but the atmosphere and approach remains just the same - Good Food in Clean surroundings with staff who are friendly and helpful, but not pushy.
We have worked hard to build our reputation and almost 20 jobs rely on our success as well as the funds to support our UK registered charity GETSuk Reg No: 1110998 - We are now in all the major guide books and on the recommendation lists of most of the established tour operators.

There are a number of smaller Supermarkets all around the Atlantic Coast areas, they have fixed prices and sell just about everything you might need. The produce market at SeraKunda sells an amazing range of fresh foods, first thing in the morning is best.

For fish, the port at Bakau has fresh fish caught every day and a walk along the pier may get you a bag full of fresh fish caught by a local for a couple of pounds. Ghana Town and Tanji south along the coast have fishing boats and both sell fresh fish but you'll need to barging hard to get a fair price.

If you see a boat land near you on the beach, wander along and see if they have Lady or Butter fish for sale - both are highly recommended and most fish sellers will clean & prepare it for a few extra Dalasi

Try a barbecue - GTS will arrange a shopping trip and prepare or help with a barbecue evening either on the beach or away from the crowds - your choice

Going !! can be a problem!! There are very few Public Lavatories in the Gambia, the men will pee at the road side and the women seem to be better organised.

If there is a tourist hotel near, most will allow you to use their lavatories - some will charge.

You or your Gambian friend can ask at any compound and you will be welcomed in - BUT most are the stand or squat variety and cleanliness and availability of running water or paper is very variable.

See the GTS Directory for a listing of approved Beach Bars and Restaurants - Most offer discounts to GTS card holders.
