Larger Buses are run by The Gambian public transport authority, there are also some larger vans that operate as public transport to the outer towns and villages. These have set starting points and can be very busy with people squeezed inside and bags, goats and chickens strapped onto the top. The Gambian country roads are often little more than tracks and very rough in places, but one of these journeys can be interesting and you may well start a chat that ends up with you being invited to the persons compound and a personal trip around their village - fine if they happen to live where you are going, BUT buses can be few and far between and lifts difficult and/or costly. In general for all but journeys of a few kilometers or non return journeys you are probably better taking a private hire or tourist taxi. The ferries that cross the Gambia are run by Gambia Public transport, at Banjul in 2007 the two ferries were working but delays are always possible some of several hours especially if you are crossing with a vehicle. GTS can advise and discuss your plans and either provide transport at a discount to GTS members or offer you the directory of options. 5 Top
