Each Dalasi is now worth around 2p, depending on the exchange rates and where you exchange it. Travellers cheques do not get as good an exchange rate as UK pounds

The new notes design fits in well with the existing notes featuring the Gambia's bird life and its landmark Arch 22 built as a commemoration of the coup that brought President Jemmah to power in July 1994

Your hotel will generally give a worse rate than the banks or bureau BUT changing in your hotel or at GTS will avoid the queues

Many local traders will offer you a better price for their goods if you are paying with pounds

Barter is the normal way of doing business, except for fixed price shops like supermarkets and restaurants - the rule is don't pay more than the item is worth to you, however persuasive the trader tries to be

Coins come in 25 and 50 Bututs (1/4 and 1/2 a Dalasi) and 1 Dalasi
Notes come in 5's 10's 25's 50's and 100 Dalasi - As shown here. There are a very few 1 Dalasi notes, but these are now very rare.

Gambian Bank notes, especially the 5's and 10's get a lot of use and end up looking and feeling more like a fabric rather than a paper. We keep a few just to remind us of the smell of the Gambia
