GTS News
Page Nearly 2 out of every 3 visitors to the GTS Bar and restaurant have seen the website before their visit to Gambia. The site now has well over 1 million hits a year, almost 150,000 invidual people visit. The website has dramatically helped us to grow over our 10 years in Gambia, we have: * 36 Staff Comments to GTS |
We still receive glowing comments about the site, which, over the years, has grown into a warren of information , readers seem to like the honest informality of the site and find it a haven from popup adverts and international marketing, that spoils so many sites. We still pay attention to the speed that pages load and make graphics as small as possible to avoid long page loading times. The Most Recent pages helps readers find new and updated pages, while teh main menu takes visitors deep into the site where they constantly find new items and articles to read. The News and Feedback pages have many old GTS pages that give a flavour of how things have developed over the years. Much of the information on the site is as relevant now as it was when the pages were first published, the UK sterling price has altered very little in the 10 years although the Dalasi is now worth 50+ Dalasi to the £ compared to 15 Dalasi to the £ in 1997. For the last couple of years my time in Gambia has proved a difficult time to do webwork on either the GTS site or the GETS site, even though I should have more time to do it. In 2005/6 the major problem was the electric supply or lack of supply, but in late Autumn 2006 NAWEC the national provider was privatised, many of the staff replaced and suddenly the supply improved dramatically, costs have risen sharply by about 40% but cuts are seldom for more than an hour and often days can go by with no cuts at all. The problem this year has been with the phone system, on returning in late September 06, the line was dead. It took weeks to have it repaired but after a few days the quality deteriorated so the line sounded as if it was running under the Niagara Falls - this caused major problems with getting any internet connection which caused a massive problem with emails and the updating of any web pages. That problem was still not solved when I left Gambia in June 06 and so I face it on my return in September - hopefully we will get it solved. I will however be spending far more time at the GTS/GETS office adjacent to the GTS Bar and Restaurant and will have access to the office line that has fewer problems - So hopefully the site will remain far more active between September 07 and June 08. Please don't give up on us - we are delighted that the site continues to be put forward as an excellent source of information on Gambia by such diverse publications as Travel Africa and Airports of the World - Many thanks to the large number of people who sign the Guest Book and use the Banta Ba. 5 Top
